Wrap-Around Case Packer and Robotic Palletiser

Interview
MAUNY Sébastien, Projects and Development Manager at Lemoine France
Could you introduce Lemoine?
Lemoine France was established in 1985. The company quickly became the European leader in the manufacture of cotton buds. We are based in Normandy.
What was the project and what objectives were you aiming to achieve?
Increasing volumes and the development of new mass-retail markets led us to consider end-of-line automation solutions. This meant moving from manual case packing and palletising to fully automated solutions.
The project involved replacing an existing case packer on the production line. The machine had to receive and inspect the cotton buds, form the case, pack the products and discharge the finished case.
The objective was to use high-performance equipment to replace these physically demanding and repetitive operations while meeting new market requirements.
What solution did JYGA propose and how does it fit into your project?
JYGA proposed a WRAP case packing solution equipped with a 6-axis robot for fast, flexible case packing. The solution enabled us to use shelf-ready cases.
What convinced you to choose this solution and work with JYGA?
The solution proposed by JYGA was compact and easy to use. JYGA convinced us through the technical solutions it proposed.
What results have you seen since installation? Have they met your initial objectives?
The initial requirements have been achieved and the system meets the objectives set:
– Throughput is 90 boxes per minute, against 88 requested.
– Achieved MTBF (mean time between failures) is above 480 minutes, against more than 150 minutes requested.
– Achieved MTTR (mean time to repair) is above 3 minutes, against more than 3 minutes requested.
– Achieved availability (MTBF / (MTTR + MTBF)) is above 99%, against more than 98% requested.
Have you since entrusted JYGA with any other projects?
Yes. We have trusted JYGA to equip several end-of-line systems with robotic palletising downstream of our case packers.
We also recently called on JYGA to install a similar case packer at another of our European sites.

Solution technique
Wrap-Around Case Packing for Cotton Swab Sachets
For a French manufacturer of cotton-based hygiene products, JYGA installed a wrap-around case packer for shelf-ready cases dedicated to cotton-swab sachets. Cardboard blanks are destacked and formed into a U shape, then the case is progressively erected and tilted in front of two robots. The first robot loads half the sachets and the second completes the filling, with each robot making two successive picks before placement. The flaps are then glued and pressed before the full case is discharged. Compact and ergonomic, the solution handles 110 products/min and up to 6 cases/min.

With increasing volumes and new mass-retail markets, we needed to automate an end of line that had previously been manual. JYGA replaced our old case packer with a compact, easy-to-use WRAP solution featuring a 6-axis robot for fast, flexible case packing compatible with shelf-ready cases. The machine handles product inspection, case forming, case packing and outfeed. The results exceeded the specification: 90 boxes/minute against 88 requested, MTBF above 480 minutes against 150 expected, and availability above 99% against a 98% target. This performance allowed us to remove physically demanding, repetitive tasks and to equip other end-of-line systems with robotic palletising, including at another European site.
