Automatic RSC Case Packer

The automatic RSC case packer is designed for top-load packing of a wide range of products. Compact and modular, it loads products into pre-formed cases such as RSC cases, trays and shelf-ready cases. The solution can be adapted to the available layout and can include an integrated case-forming module where required. Robust and multifunctional, this vertical case packer provides reliable case handling and accurate product arrangement. Its open, ergonomic design provides straightforward operator access to the different machine stations.

Automatic top-load case packing

The top-load case packer is a compact automatic solution designed to load products from above into pre-formed cases. A complete top-load case packing cell can combine three modules: an automatic case former, a multi-function vertical case packer and a case closer. The case is therefore formed upstream of the loading station within the same automated system. The solution can pack a wide variety of products into numerous case formats, including trays, open trays, shelf-ready trays, open cases, RSC cases and retail-ready packaging.

Suitable for both self-supporting and non-self-supporting products — cartons, trays, pots, stand-up pouches, flow packs, bottles, bags, packaged products and pouches — the top-load case packer meets the needs of food and beverage, cosmetics, hygiene, healthcare, pharmaceutical and other industrial applications. The cases produced by the multi-format top-load system provide strong product protection and good stability for palletising.

This flexible technology can be configured in several ways:

If you already have a case former, it can be reused and integrated upstream. The vertical case packer then performs only top loading and case closing.
If you do not have a case former but want to retain your existing case formats, the top-load case packer can be configured around those formats without requiring changes to the case design.

In a complete configuration, the vertical multi-function machine performs case forming, product loading and case closing.
The robot end-of-arm tool is developed by JYGA specifically for the products being handled, ensuring controlled handling without damaging them. Product arrangement inside the case is also optimised to minimise wasted space. JYGA develops gripping solutions for a wide range of products, including clamps, vacuum cups and fingers. Additive manufacturing technologies are used where appropriate to tailor the tooling precisely to the product.

This automatic top-load case packer can reach throughputs of up to 30 cases per minute, depending on the application.

Benefits of the top-load case packer

JYGA case packers are designed for robust industrial use and are built mainly from stainless steel. They can be adapted to installation constraints and demanding environments, including humidity and heat. This robust construction is combined with a clean, open design. Full-height access doors and the absence of floor cross-members make it easier for operators to reach the different machine stations.

The user-friendly, ergonomic human-machine interface (HMI) makes the pick-and-place case packer straightforward to operate. An intuitive navigation system allows the user to start production and change formats automatically in just a few seconds. Access to technical documentation, video tutorials and event-recording cameras can also be integrated into the HMI. This HMI concept was developed in collaboration with customers and specialists to provide a highly intuitive operator interface.

Its modular design allows case forming, top loading and closing to be combined in one system, or an existing case former to be integrated.

In 2023, we needed to make the end of line at our Saint-Pierre-la-Garenne site faster and more reliable, with fewer issues, while adding traceability through the printing of unique serial numbers. Our criteria were highly technical: JYGA responded with a customised top-load case packer, and its proximity to our factory was also an advantage. At the La Roche-Posay site, we took a major step forward by automating the case packing and palletising of our cream cartons: an RSC case packer complemented by a Pal'it Air collaborative palletiser. The cartons leave the cartoner lying flat, are grouped into batches of 36 or 48, then case packed and closed, with labelling, legibility inspection and weighing added where required. The cobot then palletises the cases safely, and the operator collects the finished pallet. What stands out for me is a reliable, multi-format solution and the strong level of involvement from JYGA throughout the project.

At Extruplast, a contract packer of non-food liquid products, this JYGA robotic cell is above all a way to increase flexibility. It gives us the versatility we need to integrate future developments and explore new packaging formats such as PET and stand-up pouches. The main gain is the time saved during tooling changeovers: automatic end-of-arm tool changes on the robot, centralised adjustments and more. We chose JYGA for its expertise and simple yet innovative technical solutions, within a reasonable budget. Although commissioning was scheduled for the very busy end-of-year period in 2014, the factory acceptance test went well, so we are confident of a rapid start-up.
